Published by David M Gilbert
Dr. David M. Gilbert is a professor, researcher, and head of the Laboratory of Chromosome Replication and Epigenome Regulation at the San Diego Biomedical Research Institute in California. In addition to managing a team of lab techs and postdoctoral students, he is tasked with securing extramural research funding for the lab. Prior to joining the San Diego Biomedical Research Institute, David M. Gilbert spent 15 years as a Distinguished Professor of Molecular Biology at Florida State University (FSU). Before FSU, he was 12 years as Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. David Gilbert received his Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry and Cell Biology with a minor in Philosophy from the University of California, San Diego, in 1982. While a PhD student in the Dept. of Genetics at Stanford University, he published numerous papers in peer reviewed journals, where he initiated studies into the temporal order in which our DNA replicates and how that is related to the determination of cell types during development. He continued that research as a post-doctoral fellow at the Centre National Recherche Scientifique in Strasbourg, France and the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology. He is credited with making studies of "replication timing" into a scientific field relating DNA replication to the structure and function of chromosomes. Dr. Gilbert’s professional associations include the International Society for Stem Cell Research, American Society of Hematology, the Epigenetics Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, where he amongst the prestigious group of AAAS Honorable Fellows.
